Airbnb's temporary phone numbers for hosts on connected software: what changes and what to check
Published November 2, 2026 · Oscar Rowe
Short version: for some reservations, Airbnb no longer gives hosts the guest's real phone number. Instead, both sides get a temporary number that passes calls and texts through, and it stops working two days after checkout. Airbnb has been using this with a limited group of hosts and guests in the US and Canada. In late October 2026 it started extending it to larger hosts and property managers who connect to Airbnb through property management software (PMS) or a channel manager.
If your door codes, arrival texts or automations rely on the guest's phone number, it's worth checking them this week. Below: what Airbnb says, what's new for connected hosts, and a checklist.
What Airbnb's help center says about temporary numbers
According to Airbnb's help center article on temporary phone numbers:
- When they're assigned. After a homes reservation is confirmed. The number works from the booking until two days after checkout, then expires. Airbnb messages keep working as usual.
- What works. Normal calls and text messages (SMS). WhatsApp isn't supported.
- Caller ID. It may show "Airbnb guest" or "Airbnb host" instead of a name.
- Real numbers in messages. If someone shares a real number through Airbnb, it may be blocked or replaced with the temporary one.
- Door codes. The last four digits of the guest's real number are shown on the reservation details page, so hosts can still use them for door codes.
- Quick replies. Airbnb removed the guest phone number shortcut from quick replies. Saved replies that use it won't send until you edit them.
- Calls from other phones. If a call or text comes from a phone that isn't linked to the reservation, the caller may have to verify, for example by entering the confirmation code.
What's new for hosts on connected software
Skift reported on October 27, 2026 that Airbnb is extending temporary numbers to large hosts and property managers in the US and Canada who connect through property management software. According to Skift, those hosts will no longer see guests' real phone numbers on qualifying bookings.
Reports give slightly different start dates. Skift wrote "starting October 30". The channel manager BookingSync titled its notice "changes to guest phone numbers from October 26", and RentalReady, another software provider, says the change applies "from the week of 26 October 2026". Either way, if a late-October reservation shows a number you don't recognize, this is the likely reason.
Skift reports that a temporary number applies when:
- the listing is in the US or Canada,
- both the host and the guest live in the US or Canada, and
- both have phone numbers registered there.
For other reservations, Skift says connected hosts can still find the guest's number on Airbnb. RentalReady says new bookings may reach your software without a guest phone number at all. So the honest answer to "what will my PMS show?" is: ask your provider.
A related change: Booking.com stopped sharing guest phone numbers with property management systems and channel managers on September 28, 2026, according to the PMS providers Sirvoy and Smoobu. If you're on several channels, check both.
Door codes: check these first
A lot of smart lock setups make the door code from the last four digits of the guest's phone number. With a temporary number, two things can go wrong. The code may be built from the temporary number, which the guest doesn't know by heart. Or there may be no number at all, and the system quietly falls back to a random code that never makes it into your arrival message.
Software handles this differently. Hospitable says it uses the real last four digits when Airbnb sends them as a separate field and falls back to the temporary number if they're missing. The property manager Evolve told Skift that codes based on the last four digits will stop working. Don't assume your setup is fine:
- Ask your PMS or lock software, in writing: for Airbnb reservations, is the code made from the guest's real last four digits, from the temporary number, or at random?
- Test an upcoming reservation. Compare the code your system generated with the last four digits on Airbnb's reservation details page.
- Consider a random code per reservation. Then send the code itself ("Your door code is 4831") instead of "your code is the last four digits of your phone".
- Remove old instructions. Search your house manual, guidebook and saved messages for "last 4 digits" and rewrite those lines.
Arrival messages, texts and automations
- SMS still works during the stay. A plain text sent to the temporary number should reach the guest. WhatsApp messages won't, and Skift reports group texts and photo sharing don't work either.
- Put the essentials in Airbnb messages too. Address, door code, parking and Wi-Fi in a scheduled Airbnb message reach the guest whatever happens with phone numbers.
- Fix quick replies. Any saved reply with the phone number shortcut needs editing.
- Cleaners, co-hosts and handymen. If they call guests from their own phones, those phones aren't linked to the reservation, so they may be asked to verify. Decide who contacts guests, and how, before a busy weekend.
- After checkout. Two days after checkout the number stops working. For forgotten items or damage questions after that, use Airbnb messages and Airbnb's support.
Asking guests for their real number: careful after November 20
Some software providers suggest asking guests to type their real number into a check-in form. Look at Airbnb's rules before you do. For reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026, Airbnb's policy "Limiting host-imposed contracts and other requirements" says hosts may not collect personal data, including contact details, during booking or the stay. The exceptions are narrow: when the law or a documented community association rule requires it, or to sign a contract Airbnb allows. If you rely on an exception, Airbnb says you need to state in your listing what you require and why, and collect no more than necessary.
This is a summary, not legal advice. If you're unsure whether your setup is allowed, ask Airbnb support and keep the answer in writing.
What doesn't change: your direct guests
When a guest books on your own website, by phone or by email, they give you their contact details themselves, and Airbnb's temporary numbers don't come into it. Lock and messaging setups that use real phone numbers keep working for those bookings.
One habit worth keeping: use that number for the stay itself. Marketing texts are a separate matter and need the guest's permission first. We cover that in how to get repeat guests to book directly without breaking Airbnb's rules.
Quick checklist
- Ask your PMS what it now receives for Airbnb guests: a temporary number, the real last four digits, or nothing.
- Check how door codes are generated and test one upcoming reservation.
- Rewrite any "last four digits of your phone" instructions.
- Move door code, address and Wi-Fi into a scheduled Airbnb message.
- Edit quick replies that use the phone shortcut.
- Tell cleaners and co-hosts how to reach guests now.
- Don't add a check-in form that collects contact details for bookings from November 20, 2026 unless an exception clearly applies.
Frequently asked questions
Do Airbnb's temporary phone numbers apply to every reservation?
No. Airbnb's help center says the feature is limited to some users in the US and Canada. Skift reports that for hosts on connected software it applies when the listing is in the US or Canada and both host and guest live there with locally registered phone numbers.
When did the change start for hosts using connected software?
In late October 2026. Skift reported a start of October 30, while software providers BookingSync and RentalReady give October 26. Ask your PMS provider which reservations are affected in your account.
How long does a temporary number work?
According to Airbnb's help center, from the booking until two days after checkout. After that, contact goes through Airbnb messages.
Can I still make door codes from the guest's phone number?
Airbnb shows the last four digits of the guest's real number on the reservation details page. Whether your lock software uses those digits, the temporary number or a random code depends on the provider, so ask them and test an upcoming booking.
Does the temporary number work with WhatsApp?
No. Airbnb says calls and regular text messages work, but WhatsApp isn't supported.
Can I ask Airbnb guests for their real number in a check-in form?
For reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026, Airbnb's policy generally doesn't allow hosts to collect contact details during booking or the stay, with narrow exceptions such as legal requirements. Check the policy and ask Airbnb support. This isn't legal advice.
